Michigan TD

Chad Henne dissects NU's secondary with passes over the middle. After a solid first half, NU's front seven didn't get much pressure on the quarterback during the last drive. It didn't help that Mike Hart finally showed up with an 18-yard rush to get the Wolverines into NU territory.

Henne caps off the drive with a 5-yard TD pass to Carson Butler.

Looks like we've got ourselves a ball game. How will NU respond?

Defense comes to play

After NU ends the first half with a field goal, NU's defense opens the second half with a key stop. The Cats keep Michigan from advancing past the NU 38 and force a punt.

Michigan QB Chad Henne was back on the last drive after sitting out most of the first half, and he looked good. But NU is handling Mike Hart well - he had just 30 yards on 12 carries in the first half.

NU 13 - Michigan 7

Guess it was Northwestern's turn to catch a break. After C.J. Bacher makes a great fake and bootleg run, a Michigan late hit penalty tacks on 15 yards. Northwestern capitalizes with a 49-yard field goal by Amado Villarreal.

Tyrell Who?

Northwestern running back Omar Conteh's first collegiate TD is a big one - a 49-yard scamper. He rushes up the middle, bounces left, breaks a tackle and outraces a defensive back for the touchdown.

About that fast start...

First: a correction to the last post - Rasheed Ward made the great play, not Ross Lane. Apparently I can't read numbers well.

After NU's scoring drive, Michigan bounces back with some nice throws by QB Chad Henne, who's back from injury. On 4th and 3 from the NU 30, the Cats are called for a face-masking penalty to keep the Wolverines' drive alive. They answer two plays later with an 11-yard TD pass.

7-3, Michigan.

The good news? Michigan RB Mike Hart, who came in averaging 168 yards a game, has six carries for 6 yards through the first 8 minutes. Good sign for the NU front seven, which has made some key stops so far and gotten more pressure on the quarterback than we've seen so far this season.

Nice start for NU

NU starts with the ball - good call by Fitz after falling behind 7 in the first few minutes last week - and converts on a quick scoring drive.

Ross Lane makes a balla play, rolling over a defender without his knees touching the ground - to turn a 9-yard slant into a 64-yard gain.

The Cats settle for a field goal - kind of a downer after the kind of big opening play that builds momentum for a game. But it's still good news: NU os 6-2 over the past two years when it scores first.

Predictions

Northwestern will win if Bacher passes for 400 yards and Mike Hart is held to 100. Neither happens. Final: Michigan 31, Northwestern 16

Amado Villarreal kicks a game tying field goal -- at halftime. Entering the second half tied 17-17, Michigan's defense gets scared, and begins to play as they did last week against Penn State. Mike Hart never relinquishes the ball in the final 30 minutes, and the Wolverines come away with a victory. Final: Michigan 31, Northwestern 17

Michigan 38. Northwestern 17. That is all.

At home, we conserve our energy. On the road, we conserve our food.

If you're mapquesting a trip from Northwestern to Ohio State, the estimated time is around six hours. But as us Daily staffers found out, it is only a wonderful estimate.

Two of the most essential elements of surviving a football roadtrip are energy and enthusiasm. If you bring both of those, you're set...even after watching Ohio State pop the Wildcats.

The Roadtrip's Crazy Eights
Eight Memorable Memories from the Daily Northwestern's 48-hr trip to Columbus, Ohio

Skyline Chili - Imported from a small town in Greece, the Cincinnati-based chili chain holds a special recipe that tastes like no other. Unfortunately, the quartet of Daily staffers failed to catch the exit for that wonderful taste, due to our fatigued stupor from a three-hour and 36-minute pounding @ the Shoe. Menu items include Coney Island hot dogs, spaghetti, and burritos, all topped with chili. Eclectic.

Tom Raper RVs - If you're scrunched in the car on the drive from Chi-town, Tom Raper's line of five consecutive RV billboards is bound to make you chuckle. The company is known for carrying a large selection of RVs, modular campers, tent campers, and cargo trailers. The ad slogan is "where fun begins." Probably true as our legs fell asleep with our luggage piled into a VW Jetta.

Indianapolis Colts pride - With the Pacers floundering in the Post-Reggie Miller era, the presence of the Colts can be felt all throughout the Indianapolis area. From Steak and Shake cups, to Bud Light ads, it is clear that Peyton Manning would win President in the state of Indiana. It provided a great diversion as we questioned whether the beltway around Indianapolis would take us where we needed to go instead of in continuous circles.

Lane Avenue - If you're looking for any color but red on this main drag through Ohio State's campus, you must be mistaken. Every single fan was wearing a Buckeyes jersey or shirt - an intense picture not always seen at Ryan Field. Common sights along the streets included lawns decked in Keystone Light cans and intense games of Ohio State cornhole...three hours before kickoff.

West Lafayette, Ind. - The only legitimate stop for food en route from Chicago to Indy. We utilized it twice. Steak and Shake Friday...IHOP saturday. The respective staffs were very friendly, meals ranging from $6-$10. And Purdue students didn't accost us for wearing Northwestern gear.

The Sission Parking Lot - Even with our notes in hand, it took us two hours to find our assigned lot, Sission, at Ohio State. We circled the Olentangy River several times before we found several parking employees who were just as clueless to the location as we were. Ohio Stadium is almost located on a moat. Then again, with the way the Buckeyes play at home, it is their castle.

Speedway or Flying J for Gas today - From the barren exits along I-65 in Indiana, its important to have your tank as close to full as possible before hitting the plains of the Hoosier state. The trip to Columbus requires a little over two tanks of gas. Our first stop took place in Brookville, Ohio at 12:30 EST Friday. A common gas company in Central Ohio is Speedway. I was asked if I wanted to sign up for a Speedy card. As a confused east coaster, I said no, and was accused by the employee of not having the willingness to devote my time to the card acquisition process. On the return trip, we stopped in Lebanon Indiana at a Flying J truck stop. $2.77 a gallon was unbeatable. And there was a country buffet. It was delicious in theory...yet when we went inside to look, there was no food at the buffet table. There was also no employee in sight. Sketch.

Ay dios mio...Hay mucho Trafico!- Sports Editor David Morrison concluded the trip slamming his wheel as us staffers encountered heavy delays on the Ryan Expressway at 2 AM saturday. Three lanes of traffic were closed, with no construction workers present. There's only three words that come to mind.

Sweet home Chicago.

Check back in two weeks for a read on our journey to East Lansing for the Cats battle with Michigan State on Saturday, October 6th.

So how good is Ohio State?

So Northwestern looked bad - very, very bad - in its 58-7 loss to Ohio State on Saturday, but you have to give props to the Buckeyes, who looked good - very, very good.

But how good?

As a voter in the UWire.com college football top 10 poll, I've got the Buckeyes at No. 6.

Their offense looked incredible and torched NU's secondary repeatedly. Their defense stuffed our run and hounded quarterback C.J. Bacher all day. They had good returns and a blocked punt on special teams. It was an impressive performance.

They're clearly the team to beat in the Big Ten, but I'm not ready to pick them to win the national championship just yet. I'm not sure if they can hang with USC's unstoppable offense, LSU's stifling defense or even Oklahoma's great secondary.

But don't count them out - yet.

Here's my top 10. Holla back with yours.

1. USC
2. LSU
3. Oklahoma
4. Florida
5. West Virginia
6. Ohio State
7. Cal
8. Texas
9. Oregon
10. Boston College
